Described by Capitol Weekly as a "renaissance man and the governor’s majordomo," DeBoo is known for his adept management of politicos, bureaucrats, and lobbyists. 

Jim DeBoo gained widespread recognition for his notable role as Executive Secretary (Chief of Staff) to Governor Gavin Newsom, where he led the Governor's Office and the Newsom Administration. During his tenure, he oversaw communications and external affairs for the Governor’s Office, helping craft the agenda, narrative, and strategic planning.

DeBoo was pivotal in spearheading initiatives in response to the COVID-19 pandemic related to businesses, schools, and the overall welfare of Californians. He played a crucial role in creating the state's annual $300 billion budget, providing much-needed financial relief to small businesses, tax credits to the film industry, and rebates to aid Californians in the economic recovery following the pandemic.

Later in his tenure, DeBoo served during the 2021 recall election and Governor Newsom's subsequent re-election in 2022. The recall effort was resoundingly defeated, and Governor Newsom secured a re-election victory with a substantial margin of nearly 20 points in both elections.

In 2023, DeBoo served as Chair of Governor Newsom's Inaugural Committee. His influential leadership has earned him consistent recognition as one of Capitol Weekly's "Top 100" influential leaders, having been ranked #1 twice.

Jim now successfully operates DeBoo, his own public affairs and political consulting firm, formerly DeBoo Communications. DeBoo has managed numerous ballot campaigns, both in favor and opposition, with a combined resource allocation exceeding $200 million.
